Shorts on Fire 3: The Sommelier
Writer | Producer | Director | DP | Editor
A man lives his dream of being a sommelier - but for laundry.
I had only a few hours with my actor to write and shoot a short. With a creeping fear of creative paralysis, I told my actor to get into whatever wardrobe option he had. I would start lighting a scene with no idea of what it would be.
I guessed that if I just began lighting a scene, my mind would naturally come up with a story that could work within that scene. By the time the lighting was set, I knew the basic story and we shot it.
I came up with the idea of a laundry sommelier and went with it. I fed lines to my actor shot by shot as I wrote the story in my head, camera in hand.
The premise was inherently funny to me, but I wanted it to also be heartfelt and human somehow.
Landing that beat while writing in real time was exciting.
What started as an absurdist parody ended as something real. A story about our peculiar obsessions, and our desire to connect to others in ways that allow us to be who we really are.
