Shorts on Fire 1: A Dating Service

A man with a very specific relationship need searches for love and companionship.

As a new father, I needed to find a way to continue making my own films and take care of a newborn. I challenged myself to make one short film a week that could be written and shot in an afternoon using only available resources. This was the first experiment.

Having such extreme constraints forced a creative flow state that was both exhilarating and terrifying.

The shot above isn’t lit well, there wasn’t any time. Using this poorly lit shot made me feel very vulnerable. In the end, I used it to increase my tolerance for imperfection and honor the needs of the story over my own insecurities.

There’s something satisfying and mysterious to seeing something come into existence so quickly. The character of Bruce came to life and his needs, although silly, made me feel something.

This method allows no time to worry about an idea being stupid. This idea is stupid and I like it.
